Hi there, friend!

Two women and a Labrador retriever dog in a desert landscape with cactus plants and mountains at sunset.

Meet the team behind Katie & Bones Books. Our stories are full of adventure, giggles, and a very good service dog who loves snacks almost as much as helping people.

Fun fact: We’re also a niece-and-aunt duo, which is really just another way of saying built-in teammates for life. Creating this book together was a labor of love and felt like something we were always meant to do side by side.

Keep scrolling to meet the whole crew. Don’t worry, Bones promised not to drool on the keyboard!

  • Co-Author

Growing up as a child living with epilepsy, Katie is the real-life inspiration behind the story. She is a licensed esthetician and first-time children’s book author based in sunny Southern California. Inspired by her own journey with epilepsy, she writes stories that shine a light on invisible disabilities and encourage understanding and kindness, while validating the authentic frustration (and sometimes sadness) of everyday life to readers of all ages in a gentle, empathetic and genuine way. Katie hopes her story reminds young readers that their feelings are real, their experiences matter, and they deserve to be understood just as they are.

Her debut children’s book follows her path toward receiving her seizure alert and response dog BONES and shares a heartfelt message about hope, perseverance and the special bond between people and their animals.

When Katie isn’t writing or working in her trade, she enjoys roller-skating, cooking, and spending time with friends. At home, she’s loved up by her two curious kittens, Edith and Cleo, along with her gentle giant, BONES – her loyal companion, biggest inspiration, and best friend.

  • Katie’s Service Dog + Chief Snack Officer

BONES is the other real-life inspiration behind the story and holds the very important job of watching over Katie. He is a loveable Labrador-Retriever and a highly trained service dog from the amazing organization Little Angel Service Dogs. With his incredible sense of smell and sharp instincts, BONES is trained to help Katie by alerting her before seizures, guiding her to a safe place, then responding and helping her recover.

BONES was born into a litter of puppies that was named after the science fiction series “Star Trek.” It is fitting that BONES was named after the popular and well-loved character Bones McCoy; a deeply compassionate, loyal figure and well….a doctor that saves lives!

When he’s off duty, BONES turns into a big, goofy sweetheart who loves naps, snacks and playtime with his favorite purple duck – a special gift from his trainer, Ken. His absolute favorite treat is cheese, and he’ll happily perform any trick (or flash those puppy-dog eyes) for a slice. BONES currently lives in southern California with his mom, Katie.

  • Co-Author & Illustrator

Cassidy is a children’s book author, illustrator, wife, and mama living in Raleigh, North Carolina. By day, Cassidy works in local government serving her community. By night (and early morning, and sometimes the space between loads of laundry), she paints, writes, and builds worlds full of warmth, whimsy, and belonging.

Cassidy has always been captivated by the quiet courage of kids - how they navigate big feelings, new friendships, and the unexpected turns life gives us. Katie & Bones Books grew from a desire to help children understand that invisible disabilities are real, strength doesn’t always look loud, and everyone deserves someone who understands their weather.

When she’s not sketching or writing, Cassidy is spending time with her husband and their two young sons, adventuring in the woods, or snuggling their parade of beloved pets - including two frenchies named Monty and Milli, several chickens, and a very dignified bearded dragon named Paul.

She believes in kindness, curiosity, and the magic that happens when a child realizes that a story was written just for them.
